WWE WrestleMania 31 Preview

Just over two weeks away from the biggest WWE event of the year, WrestleMania 31, the match card is not 100% confirmed. However the main event matches have all been set, and some of the missing matches can be predicted with confidence.

CONFIRMED: Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal

A new match that was added to the WrestleMania lineup last year was the Andre the Giant, Memorial Battle Royal, and this year it makes a return. A whole host of superstars have already been confirmed for the battle royal with Erick Rowan and Damien Mizdow being two of the latest additions.

WrestleMania XXX host Hulk Hogan presents the trophy to Cesaro for the winning the inaugural Andre The Giant, Memorial Battle Royal.

The battle royal could also be the time when the Celtic Warrior, Sheamus makes his return to WWE programming by winning the match. WWE have been airing vignettes for the return of the former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion, and with a couple of weeks to go, will they save his return for the show of shows. We can expect Mizdow and The Miz to play a big part in the battle royal too.

CONFIRMED: AJ Lee and Paige vs. The Bella Twins

The Divas Title will not be on the line this year with The Bella Twins taking on Paige and the returning AJ Lee in a tag team match. AJ returned to WWE on the March 2nd edition of RAW to save Paige from the Bella’s attack, thus setting up this encounter. The Bella Twins have dominated the divas division in recent months and a win for Paige and AJ Lee seems vital to establish legitimate challengers to the title and the Bella’s control.

Outside the ring, prior to her return, AJ Lee has been critical of WWE’s treatment of the divas division. With the impressive match Paige and Nikki Bella put on at WWE FastLane, it seems she is right to question the booking of the divas division and their preconceived place as inferior to the men. No doubt this match will be a very physical, impressive match at WrestleMania.

CONFIRMED: Ladder Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

When Dean Ambrose was disqualified for not following the referee’s five count, in the I.C. Title match at FastLane, you could be sure there would be rematch at WrestleMania with Bad News Barrett. However this match has become a multi-person (numbers have not been confirmed) ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship. A buzz has been created around the championship with the belt itself being commandeered by different superstars, all adding their name to the match.

There is some speculation that Sheamus may be heading for this match instead. However with Daniel Bryan expected to be the latest addition confirmed, it would make more sense for Sheamus to make a statement in the battle royal, rather than upsetting Daniel’s wave of popularity – which could play a big factor in the outcome of this match. WrestleMania audiences are made up of international fans and fans from every state, and have proven to be rebellious and outspoken in previous years. WWE will no doubt take this into account when deciding the finish to this match. Either way, we should be guaranteed a good match with the names involved.

CONFIRMED: John Cena vs. Rusev for the WWE United States Championship

As WrestleMania drew nearer, it looked like for the first time in his career, John Cena would not feature. Cena demanded a rematch with Rusev at ‘Mania, following passing out to Rusev’s Accolade submission at FastLane, so never submitting. However, Stephanie McMahon made matters worse for the Cenation leader and in a brilliant segment told Cena no-one is bigger than the WWE and even the great John Cena cannot demand a match at the show of shows, WrestleMania. If he wanted his WrestleMania moment, Rusev would have to accept.

This pivotal moment in the character and career of John Cena brought a new aggression and a new attitude to John Cena, who locked in his STF submission on Rusev until he agreed to the match, this past week on RAW. However Lana accepted Cena’s challenge to save the Russian sympathiser anymore suffering.

Another match, further up the card for the U.S. title will only further legitimise the championship, but WWE cannot rely again on either competitor passing out to be defeated. Therefore the finish will be vital to not bury Rusev or weaken Cena.

CONFIRMED: Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt

The WWE Universe is still undecided as to whether this match should take place, but it will on March 29th from the home of the San Francisco 49ers. Bray Wyatt revealed at WWE FastLane his recent actions and promos were a challenge to the Undertaker. This past Monday, Undertaker confirmed he will take on Bray Wyatt by referencing Johnny Cash, ‘The Man Will Come Around’.

Whether you believe the match should take place or now the streak is over it should be left alone, this match is one you want to see. The similarities between the deadman and Bray Wyatt are obvious and will help create an Undertaker WrestleMania match of which we haven’t seen before. Bray Wyatt’s aim is to take the soul of the Undertaker and become the new leader of darkness and the face of fear. This is reportedly the aim of the match too, to establish Bray Wyatt as the next phenom-style character. If this is the case, the streak cannot be damaged furthermore but Wyatt cannot be given a big loss. Expect Undertaker to win but Wyatt exacts revenge after the match.

CONFIRMED: Triple H vs. Sting

The internet wrestling community was flooded with rumours of a possible match between the Undertaker and Sting at WrestleMania XXX. However once that ship had sailed, wrestling fans pondered where, when and with who, WCW legend, Sting would compete in his first ever WWE match. When Sting interfered and caused Triple H and the Authority to be banished from power at Survivor Series, it seemed the match was set.

This is being built as WCW’s main guy against WWE’s main guy, as Sting exacts revenge for putting his company out of business. There are many questions about this match, whether Sting is ready for the match, and if not whether Triple H will be able to carry the Icon for the match. However it is likely Sting will leave Levi’s Stadium victorious as Triple H can afford to take a loss to the Vigilante and give Sting his WWE and WrestleMania moment.

CONFIRMED: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

Arguably the most important match on the card for the most important prize in WWE was up in the air with rumours of a fight between champion Brock Lesnar and WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon. Lesnar’s appearance at former employer, UFC’s event certainly added fuel to rumours he had walked out on the company and put the main event in jeopardy. However Brock Lesnar returned to RAW this past Monday, with his advocate, Paul Heyman, who cut one of the best promos in recent memory, intertwining real-life events to address the champion’s status.

With both competitors being impressive wrestlers and great performers, this will be a top championship match. Roman Reigns is WWE’s next big star and with WWE upsetting some fans putting Reigns in front of fan favourite Daniel Bryan, shows how highly they think of him. With Reigns’s dominant performance in the 2014 Royal Rumble and then victorious in the 2015 match, there was no doubt he would be in the main event at WrestleMania. Whether he is victorious is yet to be seen, Brock’s contract status is one big factor in deciding that. Many fans want Reigns to be crowned champion when all is said and done to bring the championship and the champion back to being frequent parts of WWE programming.

EXPECTED: Randy Orton vs. Seth Rollins

Randy Orton returned at the Royal Rumble to exact revenge on Seth Rollins for injuring him back in November (in truth, Randy was filming Condemned 2). However after seemingly re-joining the Authority in recent weeks, during this past Monday’s main event on RAW, Randy Orton turned on Seth Rollins, beating up Mr. Money In The Bank in a rampage across the arena.

Randy Orton entered WrestleMania XXX as World Heavyweight Champion, before being defeated by Daniel Bryan.

This will culminate in a match at WrestleMania where it will cause Seth Rollins no harm to lose to the Viper. As Money In The Bank holder and a member of the Authority, Seth Rollins will not fall back as he will begin take shape in the title picture coming up to the briefcase deadline in June.

EXPECTED: 4-Team Tag Match for the WWE Tag Team Championship

With many teams surrounding the Tag Team Championship at the moment, it seems all will involved in a title match at the sports-entertainment extravaganza. Currently champions, Tyson Kidd and Cesaro won the belts from the Usos at FastLane and since then have been involved in storylines together, with Natalya and Naomi, the respective girlfriends of Kidd and Jimmy Uso, as well as The New Day and Los Matadores more recently.

A four team match took place on last year’s WrestleMania pre-show and featured two of the four teams and was a great match, showcasing the future stars of the division and WWE. A similar match with The New Day and Kidd instead of Swagger teaming with Cesaro, could be the same.
